Job Description

The Head of Department (HOD) for Conventional Power will be responsible for overseeing and managing the entire conventional power generation operations, ensuring efficiency, compliance with regulations, and optimal performance of power plants. The HOD will lead a team of engineers, technicians, and other personnel while ensuring strategic objectives are met in terms of production, cost control, and sustainability. The role requires a deep understanding of conventional power generation technologies, including thermal, hydro, and gas-fired power plants, and the ability to integrate technological advancements to enhance operational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

  • Lead and manage the conventional power generation department, ensuring alignment with corporate goals and strategies. Develop and implement strategic plans for power generation, focusing on optimizing plant performance and reducing operational costs.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of conventional power plants, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable power generation. Monitor plant performance, address operational issues, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Lead or participate in the planning, execution, and commissioning of new projects or plant upgrades. Ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, regional, and international regulations governing power generation and environmental standards. Keep abreast of industry trends, standards, and legislation and ensure that the department remains compliant.
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, technicians, and operational staff, ensuring skills development and career progression. Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation and cost control. Monitor financial performance and implement cost-saving measures without compromising on quality or safety.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, technological upgrades, and energy efficiency initiatives to enhance the overall performance of power plants.

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications in power generation or management is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the power generation sector, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role. Experience in conventional power plants (thermal, gas, hydro) is essential.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams, drive performance, and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Deep knowledge of conventional power generation systems, including thermal, hydro, and gas-fired plants, as well as associated equipment and systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot operational issues and make strategic decisions to improve plant performance.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • In-depth understanding of regulatory frameworks, environmental standards, and safety protocols related to power generation.
  • Competence in budgeting, financial management, and cost optimization strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with senior management, stakeholders, and external regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and drive innovation to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
