Job purpose
The Chief Underwriting Officer General is a pivotal leadership position responsible for overseeing all underwriting
operations within the General Insurance lines of business. This role ensures the development and implementation of
sound underwriting strategies, drives technical excellence, and provides strategic guidance to the underwriting team.
The Chief Underwriter acts as a key liaison, fostering seamless coordination between the underwriting department and
other internal stakeholders to optimize policy issuance and uphold underwriting integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Underwriting & Portfolio Management:

- Develop and enforce robust underwriting policies and procedures to ensure adherence to risk appetite and profitability targets.
- Maintain an expert-level understanding of the company's reinsurance treaties, including facilities, capacities, restrictions, and exclusions, to maximize efficiency and optimize risk transfer.
- Manage and oversee facultative placements with reinsurers across all non-life business classes, ensuring optimal coverage and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide advanced technical underwriting support and guidance to brokers, sales teams, account managers, and branches.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of large accounts and overall portfolio performance to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
- Stay abreast of market trends, emerging risks, and competitor offerings to ensure the company's wordings and product offerings remain competitive and compliant.

Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead the recruitment, training, and ongoing development of the General Underwriting department staff, fostering a high-performing and technically proficient team.
- Establish and monitor quality control benchmarks for underwriting output, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with established guidelines.
- Conduct regular training sessions for junior underwriters, enhancing their technical expertise and professional development.
- Oversee and ensure the accuracy and integrity of data within the generalbusiness application, including data transfer and reconciliation processes with other Bankers applications.
- Generate and analyze comprehensive underwriting reports to inform strategic decision-making and performance monitoring.

Interdepartmental Collaboration & Compliance:
- Act as the primary point of contact for all underwriting-related inquiries and problem-solving for the underwriting floor, operating within defined authority levels.
- Ensure meticulous implementation of underwriting guidelines and directives across all aspects of the assigned Profit Center.
- Effectively communicate new tariffs, general underwriting decisions, and new product information to relevant business units.
- Provide essential support to back-office functions to ensure smooth operational flow.
- Accompany sales and account management teams on client visits as required, providing expert underwriting insights and support.
- Maintain and update comprehensive documentation for the General Underwriting department, including policy wordings, proposal forms, and special policy clauses.

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, or equivalent experience in credit risk insurance in similar business related field.
  • At least 15 years of experience; more than 7 years in a managerial role.
  • Strategic Leadership: Drives and articulates a clear vision for underwriting, making astute decisions that balance risk, profitability, and market dynamics, while also developing and empowering the underwriting team.
  • Effective Communication & Influence: Masterfully conveys complex information, negotiates effectively, and builds strong, credible relationships with clients, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Tackles complex challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset, remaining agile and responsive to evolving market conditions and business needs.
  • Accountability & Integrity: Upholds the highest ethical standards, takes full ownership of outcomes, and ensures strict adherence to compliance and best practices.
